What's in Your Cup? The Truth About Tea Purity

Being mindful of what we put into our bodies starts with choosing pure, unprocessed tea just as nature intended.

Tea is often celebrated as a natural, wholesome beverage, but not all teas are as pure as they seem. Some mass-produced teas are exposed to harmful practices like fumigation or irradiation—processes designed to extend shelf life but that can compromise the quality and safety of your brew. At Mabel & Pearl Tea Co., we take a stand against these practices to bring you tea that’s as pure as it gets.

The Hidden Hazards in Some Teas

Many commercially available teas undergo treatments that can introduce unwanted chemicals or degrade the tea’s natural properties. Here are a few examples:

  • Fumigation: This process involves exposing tea leaves to chemical fumigants to kill pests. While effective for pest control, it can leave residues that may not be ideal for consumption.

  • Irradiation: Some teas are irradiated to kill bacteria and other microorganisms. Irradiation involves treating tea with radiation, and in some cases, UV rays are also used. While this might sound like a good idea, it can alter the natural compounds in tea, affecting both its flavor and health benefits.

  • Pesticides and Herbicides: Non-organic teas are often grown using synthetic pesticides and herbicides, which can remain on the leaves even after processing. At Mabel & Pearl, our high-altitude teas are grown pesticide-free, taking advantage of the natural pest resistance these environments offer. Where high altitudes aren’t possible, our suppliers adhere to the globe’s strictest Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) to ensure safety and quality.
